Greenwich peninsula is an area that has undergone almost continuous change over the past 500 years, and yet remains one of the least known parts of London. Though many Londoners know well the Blackwall Tunnel Approach Road, and thousands of visitors go between North Greenwich Station and The O2, few walk the area between the south and north of the Peninsula, with its mixture of apartments, Victorian terraces, thriving factories, working wharfs, shadows of London’s industrial past, and unexpected open spaces.
Greenwich peninsula is being transformed from a derelict brownfield site into a sustainable new community. It is a place in the making, and one of the most important development sites in London. The 15-20 year regeneration programme will create a new urban district for London including residential and business communities, health, education, leisure and retail facilities. The river creates a dramatic background for the new developments. Park areas and a natural environment including the Ecology Park are an essential part of the landscape.
The regeneration of the north of the peninsula, to a masterplan by Terry Farrell and Partners led by Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration Ltd working with English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency and landowner, will create a thriving new riverside community. To the south is Greenwich Millennium Village (GMV), masterplanned by Ralph Erskine - the first of the Government’s seven innovative Millennium Communities. Led by Greenwich Millennium Village Limited also working with English Partnerships, GMV is a development of high quality design and which has led the way for establishing standards for environmental performance.
