Peninsula Square, designed by Barr Gazetas Architects and Whitelaw Turkington Landscape Architects, is a dramatic new public space at the north of Greenwich peninsula. It is designed to accommodate 26,000 people for events and daily provides a route between the Underground station and The O2 for more than 30,000 people. It is designed to accommodate 26,000 people for events and daily provides a route between the Underground station and The O2 for more than 30,000 people. The Square is animated by a performance wall with colour changing LEDs and vibrant lighting in the paving bringing a new dimension to the space at night.
Along one side enclosure is provided by a temporary living wall of sedum and ivy and the 45m high stainless steel spire provides a focal point. Dramatic geysers bubble, mist and randomly spurt water high into the air. Mick Delap, a local poet, wrote statements about time, space, latitude and longitude which are inset into the granite paving.
Greenwich peninsula is being transformed from a derelict brownfield site into a sustainable new community. It is a place in the making, and one of the most important development sites in London. The 15-20 year regeneration programme will create a new urban district for London including residential and business communities, health, education, leisure and retail facilities. The river creates a dramatic background for the new developments.
The £5 billion regeneration of the north of the peninsula, to a masterplan by Terry Farrell and Partners led by Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration Ltd working with English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency and landowner, will create a thriving new riverside community.
